Description

The word Nooristan translates to “land of illumination”. It is one of the 34 provinces found in Eastern Afghanistan. Considered to be descendants of the armies of Alexander the Great, the Nooristan peoples are known as excellent crafts people who have mastered the art of weaving. Ruby Rugs Nooristan rugs are very fine quality carpets made with gorgeous natural dyes and 100% handspun wool. Their patterns are refined with an exquisite weave, and considered to be one of the more luxurious rugs. The Suzani design was originally created by nomadic peoples in Central Asia. Tajikistan, Uzbekistan and Kazakhstan make this design most. The “Suzani” word is derived from Persia/Farsi which means “needle”.  This is appropriate because it was initially an embroidered pattern that was made on textiles, not rugs or carpets.  This tribal textile is beautiful art consisting of bright and vivid colors.  The original purpose of the Suzani rug back in the 18th and 19th century, was to be a part of the bride’s dowry. It even was a status symbol based on how detailed or intricate the pattern was made. Suzani designs often had symbols of fertility (pomegranates), health and luck.  Today, Suzani’s signature design can be found in rugs, tapestries, throws and pillows in modern and traditional settings.
