The Serapi style rug originates from the village of Serab, part of North West Persia.  It was known for producing beautifully fine carpets designed with traditional patterns and loosely spaced designs. These Heriz-type rugs are identified by a central medallion motif, which was common for the time and area. These gorgeous rugs display a wonderful combo of tribal Caucasian patterns and Safavid influences. The original Serapis were known to be very durable. They thought this was due to the fact that their sheep drank from streams that high amounts of copper. However, it is more likely that they were more tightly woven.
