The Suzani tribal pattern design was originally crafted in Central Asia by nomadic peoples. Tajikistan, Uzbekistan and Kazakhstan make this design most. The "Suzani" word is derived from Persia/Farsi which means "needle". This is appropriate because it was initially an embroidered pattern that was made on textiles, not rugs or carpets.  This tribal textile is beautiful art consisting of bright and vivid colors.  The original purpose of the Suzani rug back in the 18th and 19th century, was to be a part of the bride's dowry. It even was a status symbol based on how detailed or intricate the pattern was made. These Suzani designs often had symbols of fertility (pomegranates), health and luck, as they were later used to cover the bridal bed.  Today, Suzani's signature design can be found in rugs, tapestries, throws and pillows in modern and traditional settings.
