The distinguished Turkoman rug is named after the nomadic Turkmen tribes of Turkmenistan who also lived in Afghanistan and Iran. These original rugs were made with geometrical designs which varied from each tribe. Considered as one of the finest of all tribal rugs, the colors are dominated by dark reds with black, blue or ivory print motifs. Even though the pile is cut short, the wool is soft and hard wearing. As the Turkoman are tribal nomads, it is highly unlikely to find a large carpet. The best part of these rugs are their irregularities and also a great part of their charm. Today they are made with a mixture of regular and natural dyes on a cotton foundation.
