The Suzani design was originally created by nomadic peoples in Central Asia. Tajikistan, Uzbekistan and Kazakhstan make this design most. The “Suzani” word is derived from Persia/Farsi which means “needle”. This is appropriate because it was initially an embroidered pattern that was made on textiles, not rugs or carpets. This tribal textile is beautiful art consisting of bright and vivid colors. The original purpose of the Suzani rug back in the 18th and 19th century, was to be a part of the bride’s dowry. It even was a status symbol based on how detailed or intricate the pattern was made.
Suzani designs often had symbols of fertility (pomegranates), health and luck. Today, Suzani’s signature design can be found in rugs, tapestries, throws and pillows in modern and traditional settings.
