These nomadic rugs are famous around the world and known for their striking geometric patterns of predominantly red and blue. However, you can also find Kazaks in greens and golds as well. Kazak is named after a small city in northern Azerbaijan. The Kazak rugs are woven by Afghanis and Armenians who were influenced by the Caucasian designs of Russia and Persia. It was in the 80s and 90s that Pakistan started to make designs similar to the Kazaks of the Caucasus. Today, most Kazak design rugs are produced in Pakistan. The weavers are not from Pakistan, as they are from Afghanistan, who have been displaced by war in their country. Kazak designs contain medallions, some animals, birds, humans, trees and flowers. They often exhibit a short pile with lustrous handspun wool and natural dyes.
